See brightest star Sirius at midnight on New Year's Eve | Tonight | EarthSky

The ancient Egyptians used the appearance of the brightest star in the sky, outside of our solar system, Sirius on the horizon as a marker for the beginning of the new agricultural year, because it signalled start of the Nile's inundations. Hence the three wise men pointing to the bright star in the East.
